Fom Portoferraio to Naregno
From the port of Portoferraio, follow the indications "TUTTE LE DIREZIONI" and go on long the provincial road that leads to Porto Azzurro - Capoliveri, about 15 km later, at the crossroad for Capoliveri, turn right and after almost 100 mt turn left, following the signs for Naregno.
Capoliveri
The antique Caput Liberum o colle libero (free hill) is a small town resting on a rocky hilltop at 413metres in altitude.
Her past is tied to agricultural and mining activities but present day, Capoliveri is undoubtedly one of the most characteristic and active town centres, boasting a wealth of history and charm.
Her narrow and picturesque streets and archways known as "chiassi" hide small boutiques selling locally made products and friendly eateries where one can sample some traditional cooking and fine local wines.
Of particular beauty is all of the coastline which includes the small inlets of Morcone,Pareti, and the Innamorata.
Once small fishing centres, these areas have today become tourist villages like the beaches of Naregno, Madonna delle Grazie, Felciaio, Norsi or the more popular Lacona, Lido and Margidore.
Porto Azzurro
Boasting a lively and welcoming atmosphere, this town with evident Spanish origins was founded in 1603 by Filippo the third of Spain. Originally named Porto Longone, the town is located at the base of a promontory along an ample inlet, on the island's eastern coast.
Fort Focardo and Fort San Giacomo were an integral part of the town's system of defence, orchestrated by Don Garcia di Toledo, modelled on the city of Anversa, in an attempt to defend the village from the Saracean pirates.
